The Rhythm Divine: Sounds of the Parliament

Australia’s ABC Radio has rebroadcast highlights from the Sacred Music Concert of the 2009 Parliament of the World’s Religions.   The concert featured performances from some of the top artists from many of the world’s great religious traditions.

“Opening with Yolngu yidaki player Djakapurra Munyarryun and dancers from north-east Arnhem Land, the program included Native American chant from a member of the Cochiti pueblo people of New Mexico, Joe Suena, plainchant from the St Francis’ Choir, the Agape International Choir of Los Angeles, Ainu dance and song from Japan, and tenor Rabbi Philip Heilbrunn and the St Kilda Synagogue Choir, to name just a few. As well, one of the final performances by the indigenous singer-songwriter Ruby Hunter, who was joined on stage by Archie Roach. An extraordinary concert, the like of which will never be seen in Australia again.”
