Transcript of Speech:

Chicago is the birthplace of gospel, electric blues, house music, modern architecture, improv comedy, and the labor rights movement, but it is also the birthplace of the Interfaith movement.

The Parliament of the World’s Religions has a long and storied history. It is a history that is reflective of the best of what humanity can do when we come together for good. In 1893, the first Parliament was held in conjunction with the World’s Columbian Exposition here in Chicago at what is now the Art Institute.

100 years later, the world returned to Chicago in 1993 to celebrate the centenary of that seminal event. Since then, there have been more modern Parliament Convenings in Cape Town, Barcelona, Melbourne, Salt Lake City, Toronto, and virtually. The 2023 Parliament of the World’s Religions will be held from August 14-18th at the Lakeside Center at McCormick Place here in Chicago. 10,000+ people of goodwill from over 80 countries and over 200 different religious and spiritual traditions will be coming to this great city to make the world a better place and to defend freedom and human rights for all people.

We will begin with a parade of faith in the heart of the city highlighting Chicago’s vast diversity of faith traditions, and continue on to a 5-day convening of prominent speakers, panels, skills-based workshops, films, performances, and art at McCormick Place. We invite all people of goodwill to join us.
