As I Step Down...
DetailsDear Friends of the Parliament of the World's Religions,

In ten days I will step down as Chair of the Parliament and bring to a close one of the most stimulating and profoundly meaningful involvements of my life. Working alongside a group of skilled, imaginative, collegial, and wise Trustees from 16 different religious and spiritual traditions has broadened my perspectives and deepened my spirituality. Watching the enthusiasm and determination of a team of talented Staff members has offered many examples of self-sacrifice and commitment to a cause greater than self.

Urging Nations to Reaffirm Climate Commitments to the Leaders of #COP24
DetailsThe Parliament of the World’s Religions understands that human-induced climate change is a scientific reality, and its decisive mitigation is a moral and religious imperative.

The damaging impacts of climate change are already extensive. Many of them appear irreversible. If human behavior does not change, these impacts will become far more extreme, resulting in turmoil and suffering on an enormous scale with immense harm to both humans and other forms of life, for generations to come.

Responding to the Unique Challenge of Nuclear Weapons: A Passionate Call...
Details: The destructive capacity of nuclear weapons is beyond imagination, poisoning the Earth forever. These horrific devices place before us every day the decision whether we will be the last human generation. The power to unleash this destruction is in the hands of a small number of people. No one should be holding such power over the very creation, which we regard as a sacred gift for all today and for future generations.

A Statement on the Massacre at a Pennsylvania Synagogue
DetailsToday we learned of a massacre at the Tree of Life Synagogue in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the United States. As we write this, the tragedy claimed the life of eleven people at the synagogue, and included bodily injury to many others as well as to first responders at the scene. This crime delivers a message of hate that is aimed at a whole people, their culture, and their freedom to assemble without fear of harm to practice their beliefs in the sanctity of their own house of worship. It is incontrovertible that the perpetration aimed to seek out these people, entrap them in their sacred space, kill and maim them, and to rupture their sense of safety in the world.

An Unequivocal Condemnation of Family Separation
DetailsAs a global organization dedicated to convening and connecting families of faith and conscience around the world, The Parliament of the World’s Religions sees the United States’ recent family separation policy, which has led to the fracture of vulnerable refugee families, as an abject failure of civilized and collective life. This was a failure of leadership, a failure of policy, a failure to understand sacred texts that call for the protection of the neighbor, a failure to regard the physical and mental health of children and parents, and a colossal failure of the heart.

Among Friends: What We Mean About "Inclusion"
DetailsInclusion is an especially important concept for the 7th convening of the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Toronto, on November 1-7 of this year. We’re claiming that there is greater promise in being inclusive than in being restrictive or exclusive. Sounds accurate, right?

But I want to suggest that inclusivity, as it is usually framed, can also be problematic.

The Parliament Calls for Solidarity with Muslims and Arabs
DetailsThe American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) reported today that a flier, which originated outside the U.S., is circulating across the U.S. and other countries; the flier incites hate crimes against Arabs and Muslims, or anyone suspected of being Arab or Muslim.

We agree that hate has no home in our world, and no one should fear for their safety because of how they look, where they come from, or how they pray.
