Interfaith Blood Donation Drive Hosted in Observance of UN World Interfaith Harmony Week

The Parliament of the World's Religions is a global partner of grassroots organizers in observing UN World Interfaith Harmony Week. The event Interfaith Blood Donation Camp for the Benefit of Thalassemia Patiens was an official Parliament-affiliated celebration of the 2019 World Interfaith Harmony Week.

On February 17, 2019 Parliament Ambassador, Dr. Jayesh Shah, hosted an interfaith blood donation drive in Vadodara, India in observance of UN World Interfaith Harmony Week.

The event was hosted at the Shri Dwarkadhish Sukhham Temple, Vasundhara Society with support from Hindu, Muslim, Jain and Sikh traditions. Dr. Shah highlighted that "Interfaith Blood Donation Camp for the Benefit of Thalassemia Patients [would] be organized at one of the leading Hindu Temple. Shia Muslim Religious Leader Bhaisaheb Zulqarnain, Sunni Religious Maulana Kari Mohammad Anus, Shri Gurudayal Singhji (Sikh Religion), Shri Prakashbhai Sheth (Jain Religion) and Mr. Kunal Sharma from Youth Parliament will support the Blood Donation Camp and they will remain present with their religious followers and will donate blood. This will be a unique interfaith program for the cause of Thalassemia patients."

The donation drive proved to be a great success, Dr. Shah reports that "This was the first time that [the] Hindu Temple had given place within [the] temple for blood donation and members from Muslim, Jain, Sikh, and Christian [tradition] donated blood. Religious heads of Muslim (Shia and Sunni both), Jain, Sikh, and Christianity remain[ed] present within temple complex for the blood donation for the benefit of the thalassemia patients. We crossed the target! Collected 400 units of blood against the target of 300 - donated by members from different faiths. 42 Thallasemia patients had been given consulting and medicines and other required materials."

Dr. Shah was so inspired by the success of the donation drive that he has decided to host one every three months and has formed an interfaith committee dedicated to supporting Thalassemia patients through this work.
