Parliament Trustee Honored for Leadership & Community Service

On January 9th, the India and Indian communities overseas celebrated Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2020. At a special celebration in New York, hosted at the Consulate General of India in New York, Parliament Trustee Dr. Renee Mehra was honored with a recognition of her leadership and community service.

Dr. Renee Mehra joined the Board of Trustees at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in early 2020. A tenacious broadcaster with a burning passion for accurate and compelling storytelling and the host of the long-running television program, Dr. Renee Mehrra has been consistently singled out by the Asian Indian community as one of the most prominent broadcast journalists in the tri-state area.

Dr. Renee Mehrra is the President of Reenbow Media LLC, an advertising, broadcasting and public relations company in the US. She was appointed President of the National Indo American Press Club for North America and Canada in 2018. Dr. Mehrra was the Associate

Director, Department of External Affairs for NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens from December, 2014 through February 2017. She has served as an advisor in the Women’s Cabinet to the NYC Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs and as a Commissioner on New York City Commission on Human Rights.

An indefatigable advocate for the South Asian community and a civic and community educator, Dr. Renee Mehrra has dedicated herself to addressing the needs of immigrant communities of the tri-state area through television and print media and her nonprofit organization POWER (Providing Our Women Equal Rights) to deepen their awareness about their rights as New Americans so they can create their own stories of success.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas marks the annual recognition of the contributions of the overseas Indian community in the development of India. According to the Ministry of External Affairs of the Government of India, “January 9 was chosen as the day to celebrate this occasion since it was on this day in 1915 that Mahatma Gandhi, the greatest Pravasi, returned to India from South Africa, led India’s freedom struggle and changed the lives of Indians forever.”

The celebration in New York was featured in a live telecast of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas celebrations in New Delhi, along with observances from Perth, Paramaribo, Doha, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, London, and Port Louis. The live stream is available on YouTube Channel of the Ministry of External Affairs, India.

Dr. Mehra was, “Honored to receive award by Ambassador Chakravorty at the Consulate General of India in NY on the prestigious occasion of Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas on January 9 with an interactive session with India’s External Affairs Minister from New Delhi. We are all ambassadors of the living bridge for the next generation and we can soar high to any heights in any endeavor we undertake with the strength of our priceless heritage and timeless values that enrich us, inspire us and make us proud to be Indian Americans."
