January PoWR Member Spotlight: Robert Cathey
Robert Cathey is a Professor Emeritus at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, IL. A member of the Presbyterian Church USA, Robert has been engaged with the Parliament of the World’s Religions since the 2004 Barcelona Parliament
What does being a Member of the Parliament of the World’s Religions mean to you?
“Opportunities for dialogue and partnership with interreligious colleagues locally and internationally. The Parliament has been an invaluable resource in my teaching, research, and personal spiritual-ethical development as a Protestant ecumenical theologian.”
Why is interfaith work important to you?
“I have seen its impact in the lives and vocations of students, faculty colleagues, trustees, members of local congregations, and neighbors where I live. It has also opened doors for international travel to parts of the world new to me.”
How do you try to advance the Parliament’s mission: of interfaith cooperation and creating a more just, peaceful, and sustainable world?
“Primarily via educating others about the Parliament’s mission and history; also I serve in the Ecumenical and Interreligious Work Group of Chicago Presbytery that is engaged in interfaith relations between Christians, Jews, and Muslims in Chicago. Preparing students to visit synagogues, mosques, temples, and gurdwaras in Chicago and via virtual field trips has provided essential opportunities for growth in knowledge and familiarity with other traditions.”
