1993 Parliament of the World’s Religions Assembly of Religious and Spiritual Leaders
Over 150 religious and spiritual leaders from around the world attended the 1993 Parliament of the World’s Religions. While they were in Chicago, a small group of leaders met privately during the last three days of the Parliament. This Assembly of Religious and Spiritual Leaders was an opportunity for these individuals to discuss their hopes and visions for the future of the interfaith movement. Together, the Trustees of the Parliament of the World’d Religions convened for the following purposes:
- To provide an opportunity for Assembly members to come to know other spiritual and religious leaders in ways which could support future collaboration and actiontogether for peace, the relief of suffering, and the preservation of the planet.
- To offer the declaration of a Global Ethic and its supporting Principles for endorsement by Assembly participants.
- To invite Assembly members to identify common values and to propose projects, actions, or programs to the Trustees of the Parliament. The Council will consider ways to implement these proposals itself and, where appropriate, in collaboration with other organizations.
