Communities face conflict over the presence of historical signs, statues, and symbols. To avoid deadly results, we need peaceful approaches to reconcile different community members to old and new meanings of historical symbols. How do we promote dialogue about the past? How do we discuss the varied meanings of historical symbols and create shared meanings in the present? We will discuss how our own community handled a dispute over a Hindenburg sign. The need to delve deeply into identity, faith, and historical meaning was key in resolving this conflict.
