Historic, an apt descriptor for the 75th Commemorative Remembrance of Hiroshima and Nagasaki: Introducing the Hiroshima/Nagasaki Accord broadcast hosted by the Parliament of the World’s Religions, the Charter for Compassion, Religions for Peace, and United Religions Initiative (URI) on August 6, 2020.
As previously reported, the broadcast was hosted in remembrance the first and only use of nuclear weapons against civilians in the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. The broadcast featured background on the movement toward nuclear disarmament from nuclear experts, Mikhail Gorbachev and George Shultz, the introduction of the historic Hiroshima/Nagasaki Accord by the four convening interfaith organizations, and critical calls to action from leaders from around the world. The broadcast featured the participation of notable global nuclear experts like former Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev, former US Secretary of State George Shultz, and others, including: Kazumi Matsui, Mayor of Hiroshima; Tomihisa Taue, Mayor of Nagasaki; former US Senator Sam Nunn; Mohamed Elbaradei, former Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Noble Laureate; and Lassina Zerbo, Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization; Leona Morgan, Coordinator with the Eastern Navajo Diné Against Uranium Mining; Beatrice Fihn, Executive Director International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), and Kehkashan Basu, President and Founder of Green Hope Foundation.
