CANCELLED: Global Ethics and Human Rights in the 21 st Century: Prospects for Cooperation Across Religions

Session Description:

Two of the great moral statements of the 20th century were the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 and the Declaration Toward a Global Ethic in 1993. Each of these documents recognized the universal obligations of human beings toward one another across national, cultural, and religious boundaries. Both were the result of a process of careful deliberation among participants seeking to articulate the imperative need of their present moment. It has been seventy-five years since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and thirty since the Declaration Toward a Global Ethic. During that period, both documents have served as the starting point for important movements on behalf of human dignity across the world, and yet, both are more honored in their breach than in their observance. This session reflects on the legacy and the prospects of these documents for the 21st century. How have these documents aged? What is their contemporary relevance? How can they inform the contemporary political, social, and ecological crises that the world continues to face?
