About Sagina Kaur Hanjrah:
Sagina Kaur Hanjrah, M. D. (Sikhism) is a physician and Associate Director of Medical Student Education in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Illinois in Chicago. She previously practiced family medicine at Locums-Women’s College Hospital and Kirkland Lake Hospital in Chicago after receiving her medical degree from the University of Chicago Medical School. Her commitment to humanitarian service is deeply rooted in her Sikh faith. She provides medical care through the Heartland Alliance to unaccompanied children who have entered the country illegally, and was a member of the Substance Abuse Committee at the Access Community Health Network. She participated in United Sikhs Relief Projects for Hurricane Katrina, in Thailand after the 2005 tsunami, and in the Haiti after the earthquake and continues to be an active member of United Sikhs. She and her husband are Board members of the Awassa Children’s Project, which houses and supports children orphaned by AIDS in Ethiopia. As a Sikh raised in Toronto, she has a lifelong personal experience of religious diversity.
