Payam Akhavan LLM SJD (Harvard) is Professor of International Law at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, Member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, and a former UN prosecutor at The Hague. He has also served with the UN in Bosnia, Cambodia, Guatemala, Rwanda, and Timor Leste, and worked on human rights matters in other conflict zones including the Gaddafi case in Libya, Yazidi case in northern Iraq, and the Rohingya case in Myanmar. His prior academic appointments include the universities of Yale, Toronto, Oxford, Paris, EUI (Florence), and he has published extensively on international criminal law and human rights in leading journals. He has served as counsel before the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court, the European Court of Human Rights, and the Supreme Courts of Canada and the United States, and his human rights work has been featured in the New York Times, BBC HardTalk, CBC Ideas, Maclean's magazine, Toronto Star, and Montreal Gazette. He delivered the 2017 CBC Massey Lectures, and his companion book In Search of a Better World: A Human Rights Odyssey, became the top bestseller (non-fiction) in Canada.
