Chicago Interfaith Community Celebrates United Nations World Interfaith Harmony Week

The first week of February marks the official United Nations observance of World Interfaith Harmony Week and Chicago’s own interfaith community is coming together to celebrate.
On February 8th, the Parliament of the World’s Religions is hosting an Interfaith Breakfast in commemoration of UN World Interfaith Harmony Week—a global event that encourages grassroots efforts designed to link people together in a global wave of understanding, respect, and action.
“Chicago can proudly claim to be the birthplace of the global interfaith movement and its central role continues 125 years later as the Chicago-based Parliament of the World’s Religions promotes the United Nations World Interfaith Harmony Week initiative during the month of February. Our interfaith breakfast on February 8, at Chicago Temple, will bring faith communities from across the region together to celebrate mutual understanding and cooperation toward the goals of justice, peace, and environmental flourishing across the globe”, expresses Dr. Larry Greenfield, Executive Director of the Parliament.
World Interfaith Harmony Week is the result of UNGA Resolution A/65/PV.34 and was proposed in 2010 by HM King Abdullah II and HRH Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad of Jordan. All around the world, organizations, and individuals host interfaith events during the first week of February.
The breakfast celebrates organizations and individuals dedicated to fostering interfaith harmony in the Chicagoland area. Local faith leaders, community organizers, and interfaith partners will lead prayers and representatives from the Council of Religious Leaders of Metropolitan Chicago, Faith In Place, ARISE Chicago, Sacred Space International, and Spiritual Playdate will share remarks on the work being done locally to create bonds of friendship and support amongst faith communities.
The event will also mark the launch of the Parliament’s “Chicagoland Interfaith for Good” Donation Drive. The Parliament invites individuals, communities, and organizations of faith and conscience to host a drive to collect non-perishable food items, hygienic products, and gently-used clothing between February 8th and February 28th. Donations will benefit the Chicago Food Depository, Olive Branch Mission, Cornerstone Community Outreach, and Dress for Success.
