Brotherhood in Islam and Catholicism

Session Description:

Two figures have had a major impact on the way Islam and Catholicism have approached the concept of brotherhood and how these ideas can be extended to fellow peoples around the world of all faiths. This presentation consists of two speakers, one a professor and scholar of Islamic theology and the other a professor and Jesuit Catholic priest, both members of the faculty of the Department of Theology and Religious Studies and John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio. First, Dr. Saritoprak examines the place of the idea of brotherhood in the thought of the Muslim theologian Said Nursi particularly as it is outlined in his short work “The Treatise on Brotherhood.” Dr. Bretzke looks at the revitalization of the idea of brotherhood that the current Pope, Pope Francis has sought to reintegrate into Catholic doctrine particularly as can be found in his Papal Encyclical of 2020 Fratelli Tutti.
