Documenting Women’s Voices as Wikipedia Editors | Part 1

Session Description:

Join The Wikimedia Women in Religion User Group, and address gender bias by improving the coverage of women in religion on Wikipedia. Only 18% of entries are about women and only 9% of the editors are women. All are invited! Experience as an editor is not necessary. This is a hands-on workshop. We strategize the launch of sessions in your communities and work with groups in the U.S., Kenya, Australia, and India. Participants sign up as Wiki editors, create and edit biographical entries, navigate Wikipedia pages as an editor, learn the rules for getting an article accepted, compile lists of notable women in religion, and strategize their goals as a Wikipedia editor. The Wikimedia Women in Religion User Group creates, updates, and improves Wikipedia articles of all women who are scholars, activists, and practitioners in the world’s religious, spiritual, and wisdom traditions. We write women back into history, especially women of color and women who identify as cis, transgender, and LGBTQ+.
