Democracy and human rights are impossible without the Biblical foundation that every human being is created in the image of God. In Rabbinic literature and medieval Jewish Rabbinic scholarship, this foundation principle is given expression in a variety of practices and customs that sustain human rights and that pave the way and undergird democracy.
