“No Place for Hate in Mr. Rogers Neighborhood”: The Real Kids of Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood Discuss the Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting and its Aftermath
Session Description:
Deep in the heart of all-American suburbia, lies the inspiration and model for the real-life Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood. On October 27th, 2018, a local, who had become radicalized by the fringes of far-right American politics, came and viciously attacked his neighbors at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh. How could he forget everything that Mr. Rogers had taught us? How could some, in the same diverse generation, now become so divided in the era of identity politics and white nationalism? Meet with some of the real kids who grew up in Mr. Rogers’ neighborhood during the 1970s and 80s. Hear and learn how they came to unite against the senseless tragedy, and heal together through genuine affection for community, reconciliation, and interfaith cooperation.
