Peace Can Save Our Planet

Session Description:

Presenters emphasize the universal human right to survival as they explore the impact of militarism and climate catastrophe on people worldwide. Extreme weather events causing storms, flooding, and drought have disproportionately affected impoverished countries, yet the populations of wealthier countries bear far greater responsibility for contaminating the environment and exacerbating climate change. Imam Mujahid, Dr. Gaddis, and Kathy Kelly draw from decades of experience as campaigners for human rights to raise vital questions: what reparations are owed to those whose lives and homes are destroyed by extreme weather events? How should wealthier countries prepare for rising numbers of refugees? Given the precarious future faced by people, worldwide, what prospects exist for fostering intergovernmental collaboration? Presenters assert that practicing love of enemies offers a way beyond the looming threats humanity faces.
