Raising the Flag 1941/Raising the Flag 2022 Tryptich – Discussion

The art is a collaborative film/digital art project by brother & sister team, Tom Mae and Reet Mae, filmmakers, and artists, reflecting the right to stand on the land of our ancestors, with our culture/language. Raising the Flag 2022: an artist depiction of Ukraine raising the flag is similar to raising the flag in Vysokopillya, Sept. 4, 2022, which echoes the 1941 raising the flag in Estonia. Both panels speak to Soviet/Russian imperialism, and the right to self-determination. Peace: This dove expresses our hope for peace in Ukraine with continuing peace for the Baltics and the right of all nations to live in freedom under their own flag on their own soil. Raising the Flag 1941: based on an unreleased, remastered digital art file from the film, “Lipu Heiskamine/Raising the Flag”. This film has been submitted for the event and the artwork is an accompanying piece that also has QR codes that link to animations from which the artwork is created.
