Religion as an Active Anti-Authoritarian Voice

The religious and the political often go hand-in-hand. As authoritarian regimes rise, religions can become the justification for authoritarianism, an accomplice in doling out oppression and violence. What is the role of religion as something else? What would religion look like as an active anti-authoritarian voice that advocates for those most harmed by these regimes? How do different faith leaders, according to their traditions, understand the shifting geopolitical landscape and act in the world to assure human rights and freedoms? What does it look like to fight for the rights and freedoms of those we are not ideologically aligned with? How do we do this work?
