Submission? Or Commission?
Session Description:
What assumptions do we make when we see a woman wearing a head covering? Do we think of “repression” or “spiritual practice”? “Submission? Or Commision?” promotes discussion among men, women and within families about choices made by women regarding head coverings. This installation connects the many styles of head covering in ways that engage the viewer and normalize the practice. The dressing table, chair and mirror evoke a familiar setting where a woman would sit and cover her hair, tucking a lock or wisp beneath the covering. The questions on the mirror address our assumptions. Messages on leaves floating above share women of faith’s memories, feelings, traditions and beliefs. They are arranged as if growing from one tree, representing how we are more alike than not. The installation honors the choices made by individual women and highlights the positive energy, faith and ideas, and rewards us in our acceptance of all women’s choices, joining as companions on life’s journey.
