What Is A Sacred Text?
Session Description:
Religious traditions have formative texts they deem as sacred and to which they turn to for guidance, study, wisdom, and how to live. This can be the Torah, Koran, the Veda, and the New Testament among many others. This session uses Judaism as an example and explores how Torah is read and studied in Jewish tradition. As a sacred/ Divine text, is there only one true meaning or can it be read on multiple levels? What are our responsibilities to the text when its ideas directly clash with our vision of morality? We offer some approaches from Jewish tradition and see how they might resonate with the traditions of the participants. All are welcome to participate.
