Women’s Task Force of the Parliament of the World’s Religions Calls for the Expulsion of Iran from the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women and Stands in Solidarity with the Women and People of Iran Fighting for Freedom

December 9, 2022

The Women’s Task Force is pleased to report that as of Wednesday, December 14th the 54-member UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) adopted a resolution to remove Iran from the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) for the remainder of its four-year term ending in 2026.

The Task Force continues to stand in solidarity with the women and people of Iran.

December 9, 2022 – The Women’s Task Force of the Parliament of the World’s Religions unequivocally denounces the Islamic Republic of Iran and its violent repression and persecution of the peaceful protests of the Iranian people. The group of Experts of the United Nations Human Rights Council in an 11 November press release, has condemned the use of the death penalty against protestors and the blatant persecution of women. This persecution has included rape, torture, incarceration, and violence further eroding the freedom and human rights of the Iranian people.

As stated in the Parliament’s signature document Towards A Global Ethic, “When [leaders]  lie in the faces of their people, when they manipulate the truth, or when they are guilty of venality or ruthlessness in domestic or foreign affairs, they forsake their credibility and deserve to lose their offices and their voters.”

For these reasons, the Women’s Task Force of the Parliament of the World’s Religions calls for the immediate expulsion of the Islamic Republic of Iran from the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women and calls upon all people of faith and ethical conviction, the global interfaith community, as well as civil society, and the world’s faith and governmental leaders to denounce the Islamic Republic of Iran’s violation of the human rights of its people.
