Parliament Trustee Recognized for Commitment to Community

On Sunday, May 19, 2019 at the War Memorial in Trenton, New Jersey, Saffet A. Catovic, was one of the community organizers/activists whose efforts were recognized and honored at the 2019 New Jersey State Governor’s Jefferson Awards presentation ceremony and celebration of volunteerism. In the case of Saffet A. Catovic, his efforts in youth development through the administering of Muslim Scouting programs and advocacy around environmental issues merited him receipt of the Jefferson Award.
The Parliament of the World’s Religions congratulates Saffet Catovic, a Trustee and member of our Climate Action Task Force, for receiving the New Jersey State Governor’s Jefferson Award.
The Jefferson Awards is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious recognition program for volunteer/public service, and are the official recognition program of the United States Senate. The NJ Governor’s Council on Volunteerism partners with the Jefferson Awards to recognize extraordinary volunteers from New Jersey through the New Jersey State Governor’s Jefferson Awards.
Saffet serves as Co-chair and Founder of the Green Muslims of New Jersey and is deeply involved in the Green Ramadan movement. He was integral to the drafting of the Islamic Declaration on Climate Change and is an advisor to the Muslim Student Association at Drew University.
Saffet shared his reaction to receiving the Jefferson Award. “I am truly grateful and humbled by this honor and will continue to do my best to Serve God through Service to Humanity and Creature-kind, especially in the face of the impending existential threat to ALL life on our planet – Mother Earth – which is the direct result of human caused climate change. I look forward to building upon the experiences and work begun here at the local and state level by bringing it to the national and global level through my on-going activities and collaborations with the truly amazing and talented people of faith in the Climate Action Task Force and pray to further this critical inter-faith activism for Mother Earth and all her inhabitants through my new role as a member of PoWR’s Board of Trustees.”

Saffet will be a panelist on a PoWR webinar in June focused on the Juliana vs. US lawsuit, brought by a group of young people seeking to uphold their right to a climate capable of sustaining life. This is the first webinar in our Faith and Climate Series.
