The Art of Participatory Leadership Retreat: Offers Training Before Parliament Opens

August 21, 2015

“The Art of Participatory Leadership is being offered as a Pre-Parliament retreat. Participants will be encouraged to bring to life leadership skills that reflect the Parliament’s theme, “Reclaiming the Heart of Our Humanity.” Over my many years of interfaith engagement I have learned that it is essential to develop a toolbox of leadership skills if we are to bring to life the outcomes that will make a real difference. I hope to see you before and during the Parliament! Please note: Parliament registrants will receive a discount for this retreat.”
Rev. Bob Thompson, PWR Board Chair Emeritus

Many of us see our work as transformation.
Our big dreams compel us to see and act on what others may not see. Many of us are required to transform both “what” we are doing and “how” we are doing it together — how we meet and join in interfaith action. Transformation requires both deep spiritual practice and effective meeting and community engagement approaches to move forward social change agendas. The Art of Participatory Leadership is all about that.

The Art of Participatory Leadership is all about that.

Many of us wonder how to improve capacity to transform-
Ourselves. Our committees. Our congregations. Amidst rapid change and high complexity. Faith communities of all kinds are developing these practices. Together, we are awakening to different ways of being in leadership together, moving beyond the typical traps of adversarial agendas and into process of co-learning and co-evolution that lead to wise action and change. We’re seeking consultative processes and engagement strategies that bring out the best in collaborative communities.
Who should attend?
Faith community leaders from all stations and traditions, involved in social change. We define a leader as “anyone who wants to help.” We welcome clergy, committee leaders and members, council members, youth ministries, and all who want to create a desirable and deliberate future within and across faith communities and traditions.
What is The Art of Participatory Leadership?
The Art of Participatory Leadership (also known as Art of Hosting) is a 2-day intensive at which we will practice a set of simple yet powerful approaches for designing and hosting (facilitating) powerful conversations and meetings. These practices invite people to step in and respond to the challenges facing them in creative, authentic, compassionate, and innovative ways.
Groups and organizations using the Art of Participatory Leadership practices report better decision-making, more efficient and effective capacity building and greater ability to respond to opportunity, challenge, and change. Participants say that they walk away feeling more empowered and able to help guide meetings and conversations they are part of towards more desirable outcomes.
How and why will we work together?
We work with collaborative methodologies such as Circle, World Cafe, Open Space Technology, Pro-Action Cafe, and more. We will shape together particular questions that help focus specifically on Parliament themes to Reclaim the Heart of Humanity.
The Art of Participative Leadership is intended to support three intentions:
to build stronger teams and partnerships
to enhance skills to work with complexity, uncertainty, and change
to apply our learning to efforts important to our communities
