Coming Soon…The Faith and Climate Webinar Series and WebForum

May 14, 2019

The Parliament’s Climate Action Program and the Security and Sustainability Forum are working together to produce a new webinar series early next month. Called Faith and Climate, the webinars will bring faith leaders and climate activists from all sectors and faiths together to address our increasingly urgent and collective responsibility to act on behalf of the natural world and all humanity to change the catastrophic impact we are having on our planet.  The series focuses on the moral and religious implications of the escalating climate challenge, and the actions being taken by people of faith to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, address the consequences of climate change, and begin an effective transition to a low-carbon economy and lifestyle. Panelists will present their perspectives on specific issues and answer questions from the audience of online participants.
The series begins on June 4, 2019, with faith-based perspectives supporting the plaintiffs in Juliana v. United States, the landmark Youth Climate Suit that has been proceeding through the federal courts since 2015. Moderated by David Hales, President Emeritus of College of the Atlantic and Chair of the Climate Action Task Force for the Parliament, this webinar features Howard Learner of the Environmental Law and Policy Center, and the Parliament’s lead counsel in its anticipated amicus curiae filing in support of the suit.
The next webinar is on June 18, and will feature Fr Joshtrom Kureethadam, author of The Ten Green Commandments of Laudato Si’ and Coordinator of the Sector of “Ecology and Creation” at the Vatican Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development. He will be joined by Rachel Mikva, Rabbi Herman E. Schaalman Chair & Associate Professor of Jewish Studies, and Senior Faculty Fellow of the InterReligious Institute, and Saffet Abid Catovic, PWR trustee, a founding member of the Global Muslim Climate Network, and the Imam and Muslim Chaplain at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey.  The panelists will discuss the impact and interfaith reach of Pope Francis’s second encyclical On Care for Our Common Home.
The Climate Action Program is also launching a special “WebForum” page on PWR’s website to provide background about the Faith and Climate Webinar Series and begin a discussion of webinar topics ahead of time. The WebForum will feature a lead essay by a panelist from the upcoming Faith and Climate webinar, with written responses from other panelists and invited experts from the field, as well as comments and questions from readers. Each WebForum topic will include background information about the specific webinar topic, with links to further reading in anticipation of the webinar itself.
We invite you to register for the first two Faith and Climate Webinars today! PWR’s WebForum for the June 4 webinar on Juliana v. United States will be online next week and we hope you’ll begin the conversation with us there, as well.
