Remembrance Broadcast of 75th Anniversary of Hiroshima/Nagasaki Bombings Brings Together Global Nuclear Experts

CHICAGO, IL (August 1, 2020) –  The 75th anniversary of the atomic bombing of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki will be commemorated on August 6, and 9, 2020 by four of the world’s leading interfaith organizations committed in a common mission on social justice, peace, and sustainability.

The Parliament of the World’s Religions, the Charter for Compassion, Religions for Peace, and United Religions Initiative (URI) are sponsoring the historic broadcast, “75th Commemorative Remembrance of Hiroshima and Nagasaki: Introducing the Hiroshima/Nagasaki Accord” which features the participation of notable global nuclear experts like former Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev, former US Secretary of State George Shultz, and others, including: Kazumi Matsui, Mayor of Hiroshima; Tomihisa Taue, Mayor of Nagasaki; former US Senator Sam Nunn; Mohamed Elbaradei, former Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Noble Laureate; and Lassina Zerbo, Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization; Leona Morgan, Coordinator with the Eastern Navajo Diné Against Uranium Mining; Beatrice Fihn, Executive Director International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), and Kehkashan Basu, President and Founder of Green Hope Foundation.

Viewers will also hear the important role which religious and faith communities have in the ethical, spiritual and moral dimensions on nuclear weapons abolition, as shared by Audrey Kitagawa, Chair of the Parliament of the World’s Religions; Marilyn Turkovich, Executive Director of the Charter for Compassion; Dr. Azza Karam, Secretary General of Religions for Peace; Victor Kazanjian, Executive Director of URI; and Bishop William Swing, Founder/President of URI.

To Parliament Chair, Audrey Kitagawa, the role of spiritual and religious communities is especially critical in this abolition movement, “Importantly, this 75th commemorative event of the historic co-sponsorship of the four largest interfaith organizations demonstrates the significant role which communities of faith will have in  the mobilization of their global constituencies in jointly presenting the moral, ethical and spiritual basis in our call for the abolition of nuclear weapons.”

The broadcast will feature the introduction of the Hiroshima/Nagasaki Accord, a steadfast call toward the abolition of nuclear weapons in the world, and the inauguration of the annual “Voices Youth Award”, sponsored by the four interfaith organizations.
