Human Rights in Contemporary India

Session Description:

India has a history of human rights abuses that have directly impacted its religious minorities. During a November 1984 pogrom, Hindu mobs sponsored by the state set ablaze Sikh homes and killed approximately 10,000 Sikhs across India. In this panel discussion, Harvinder Singh Phoolka, a human rights attorney, who had been fighting a legal battle to bring to justice several political bosses responsible for these massacres, will provide an update and comment on the current climate facing the world’s most populous country. In addition, other panel members will discuss the philosophical and historical underpinnings in the Sikh narrative on human rights.
