Interfaith Advocacy as a Tool for Social Cohesion: The Case of Muslim-Jewish Cooperation
Session Description:
Building social cohesion amidst diversity stands among the great challenges of the 21st century. Widespread polarization has led to the weaponization of identity and demonization of others based on who they are, what they believe, or how they practice. However, when people of diverse backgrounds work together on issues of common concern, difference becomes a strength and shared action leads to increased trust. In the United States, some seek to use Muslim and Jewish identities as a tool for division, but Muslim-Jewish advocacy and action are proving to be an effective remedy. This session uses the case study of the Muslim-Jewish Advisory Council as a model for how diverse communities identify areas of shared concern, navigate and overcome mutual suspicion, and take shared action for the benefit of all. People of all backgrounds are welcome.
