Learn How University Students Advance Human Rights Through Intercultural Langar Course
Session Description:
How do university students raise consciousness while promoting tolerance and solidarity through undergraduate scholarship utilizing the practice of Sikh Langar, a 500-year-old tradition founded in human rights regardless of race, class, caste, gender, or faith? This universal course is designed for collaboration between academic institutions and local Sikh and interfaith communities in a secular space. The flagship institution, the University of Denver’s Provost explains the community impact beyond religious studies of a values based Eastern tradition focused on the public good. Brandon University, the first Canadian location, shares their reasoning for incorporating the course within the STEM scholarship in Fall 2023. Using the Langar framework, students learn to transcend differences and diminish societal polarization through amplifying motivations and methods for community building. The model is presented for use by universities and educational systems, as well as participants of this session.
