Models for Training Educators How to Teach About Religion and the Global Ethic
Session Description:
This panel introduces several models for preparing K-12 teachers to teach about religions and the Parliament’s Global Ethic document. Henry Goldschmidt discusses the lived religion pedagogies for K-12 religious diversity education developed by participants in the Interfaith Center of New York’s “Religious Worlds of New York” summer institute (a professional development program for K-12 teachers sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities). Nathan C. Walker, Manager Director of The Foundation for Religious Literacy and Founder of ReligionAndPublicLife.org, discusses his academic research and experience working with teachers who teach about religions. The presenters explore how they incorporate the Parliament’s Global Ethic document in their teaching models. Attendees will split into groups based on whether they are teachers, parents, or interested citizens to discuss how to advocate and support teaching about religion and the Global Ethic in their local schools. The panel is moderated by Kate Soules, Director of the Religion & Education Collaborative.
