The Ethical Crisis Among Unaffiliated Spiritual Leaders
Session Description:
Ethical guidelines and training are fundamental to every religion, but they have not averted serious ethical breaches by some leaders. This is one reason for the exodus from mainstream religions and the burgeoning number of “spiritual but not religious” and unaffiliated seekers. The spiritual needs of that cohort have been met in large part by independent gurus, teachers, coaches, and guides. These leaders have had a positive impact on millions, but are often self-authorized and as prone to unethical behavior as their more traditional counterparts—perhaps more so in the absence of oversight from peers, lineages, or institutions. The Association for Spiritual Integrity was founded to establish ethical standards and related support mechanisms for teachers and students in this important subculture. The session, led by ASI Board members who have served this population for decades, explores the challenges these complex issues present, in a format that encourages audience discussion.
