Uyghur Muslim Survivors Speak About Genocide in China

Session Description:

This session discusses China’s genocide toward Uyghur Muslims. China violates Uyghurs’ freedom, human rights, and democracy. Dr. Aynur, Muhyar, and Zulfiye lost loved ones in this atrocity. They sought refuge and strength in their faith. Their dedication to religious education is a story of faith—an effort to understand more about Islam in the midst of suffering, to keep the faith strong even as loved ones are lost and their homeland is overrun by evil, to find and share meaning, healing, and resilience. This session addresses how three Uyghurs found inspiration in Islamic religious learning and teaching as they appreciate religious freedom. It then explores the role of faith in responding to genocide by raising concerns about religious teachers’ responsibilities to educate the community who are suffering from the impact of this genocide and to build community resilience.
